What is it like? How do I help manage the class and what do you think I should know before the first day?

It's physically draining but can be rewarding. Try to smile alot. The kids have to look at your face all day.
Ask the teacher " what can I do? " throughout the day.
Try to take initiative.
Enjoy, kids say the darnedest things!

It really depends on the lead teacher. And on you. Sometimes, the assistant is an equal partner in the classroom, doing some of the circle activities. Sometimes, the assistant gets all the menial jobs -- cleaning up and setting things out, changing diapers, if applicable, running to the office to make copies. Sometimes, a good assistant ends up serving as shadow for the one or two most difficult kids in the room.
Don't be afraid to share your ideas with the lead teacher. Be supportive, but also politely offer to let her know what you are best at.
If you are new to the classroom, it is unlikely you will be expected to have the ins and outs of classroom control. Watch closely, and you'll learn.
In general, try to be unflaggingly positive in your own mind. Kids who misbehave usually do so for a reason.

Let the teacher do the actual teaching but otherwise don't hesitate to get involved in breaking up a fight, cleaning a mess, helping a student, setting up for activities, etc. This makes a difference between a good assistant who does what's asked of her and a great one who takes initiative and really helps the main morah out.
Expect to get your hands dirty!!!!
