Is there such thing? I'm not really looking for a mattress pad, just something to put under the sheets to protect the mattress as we just got new ones. Any ideas?

Sure! I bought them at the Jewish linen store.
I highly recommend the no sweat waterproof ones. Learned my lesson after having children  They always managed to leak their bottles in my bed. Now with the new mattresses we bought better mattress protectors.

I brooklyn there's elegant linen (we bought great waterproof ones but very expensive) d'rose linen among others. Sometimes closeout connections has 48" too but while they say waterproof they are not fully waterproof as per my experience.
FYI, in my experience, even with fully waterproof mattress pads, remove linen and mattress pad as soon as it gets wet. Don't let it sit.

I use regular "full" size mattress protectors on 48" beds and never have a problem. The sheet on top of it holds it smooth. Then you can just buy at any regular linen or online place without needing a specifically Jewish store.
