I dress my boys in skin tight leggings. They look adorable.

I don't see where chassidish comes into the picture. I've seen plenty of non chassidish kids dressed in the same fashion described.

I think what op asking is not why chasidim do it; its fashionable, but whether they know that it somehow labels them gay? I dunno sounds crazy while I write it

Gay men often dress fashionably; that does not make all fashionable men gay.
Let these little boys wear their vivacious wardrobes before they face a lifetime of black and white identical uniforms.

I don't have an issue with the little boys dressing in the way described. However I do have an issue with what I've been seeing in the yeshiva world - granted, not chassidish, but nevertheless. Boys going to yeshiva should not be wearing tight pants. And their fathers coming to pick them up should certainly not be wearing tight pants. When I went to pick up my son the other day, I saw a father wearing tight white pants. Really? I'm no fanatic, but I do believe that if we are sending our boys to yeshiva there oughta be some difference, a level of refinement, in the way we dress. I believe there can be fashion without necessarily copying everything we see.

It's not necessarily chasidish, plenty of yeshivish people dress their sons that way too. Personally, I think it's really unattractive - and it's really mostly about the mothers being shopaholics and needing to dress everyone in their sphere as trendily as possible. But it still comes out being uniquely jappy. I've never seen non-Jewish kids, even rich celebrity wannabe types, dressed the way frum New York types dress their kids. Flatbush fashion has a flavor all it's own. If you look for European kids clothes online, you don't see trends pushed as far as the frummy fashion currently dictates (excet on websites that are trying to pretend they aren't really just for Brooklyn and Monsey Jews). Skinny jeans, yes. Skintight leggings, no. Slim buttondowns, yes. Floral collarless blouses, no. There's something distinctly effeminate about the current frummy in-styles. And the prices are a whole nother level of ridiculous.
Theoretically, I support people's right to dress their kids as they and their kids see fit, but something about this style really rubs me the wrong way. Maybe it's that it's just REALLY not my taste. Maybe it's that your son isn't your doll (your daughter isn't either, for that matter), and I don't like that women are pushing yet another set of expensive, meaningless, materialistic obsessions on the community at large. Maybe it's that the people who dress their kids this way would question their sons' zexuality (and/or frumkeit) if the kid wanted to wear the same things later in life. One way or another, I cringe when I see kids dressed like that on the playground, or when I visit neighborhoods where it's common. B"H it's not the universal community standard where I live.

Or maybe obsess less over needing them to wear identical black and white uniforms later in life...

mommy3b2c wrote: | Lol. I'm not chassidish at all and I'm sure you would say that I "dress my boys gay." All it shows is that I know fashion. Leggings are now fashionable for little boys. Go onto any European childrens clothing website. That is what they are showing. It's true that most non Jews in my area don't dress their boys fashionably. That's because they can't afford it. Go to some upper class non jewish neighborhoods and see how they dress their kids. Where do you think the Jewish boutiques get their ideas and their clothing from? And for the record, only fashionable people dress their kids fashionably. Nothing to do with chassidish or not. |
This whole response is snotty and "ew."

I fail to see what is snotty and ew about my response. Please explain.
Also, if you choose to insult, preferably don't do it anonymously.

A) I do love fashion, I'm not sure why that bothers you so much
B) I find tons of super fashionable stuff at great prices. If you want I can help you find some great bargains.
I've actually met a ton of Imamothers in real life. I'm really not that anonymous.

There's this prevalent view on this site that people who enjoy fashion are materialistic, exclusive, haughty, shallow, and living meaningless lives.
It's a hobby. Like knitting, stamp-collecting, woodworking...it's a hobby that some people enjoy. Take a breath. Just because you don't enjoy it, doesn't mean people who do are bad.
