Not quite the elite literary voice one might have expected.

Still, it can't be denied that his writing made a significant impression on the world -- and on my childhood.

I'm not a prolific poster here but if I may chime in, I feel the honor is warranted.
If one was to print out the lyrics he's penned over the years and judge strictly on the quality, innovation with language and turn of phrase, you'd find the body of his work to be literary indeed.
Or at least, I would 😉.

Disclaimer: I'm not all that familiar with the ouvre (enough to get Imasinger's reference though. ETA: And the last 2) though I did go to a Peter Himmelman concert at a JCC once.

I think he is a great poet right up there with TS Elliot and Ezra Pound, two great writers who have obviously influenced his work.
