How much would it cost to make a nice kiddush in shul? Just the food, not the party planning.
Eta: it will be around 150 people, with cholent, kugel, cakes, cookies fruit and some extras like herring. I am located in the us, but our of town.

where are you located? Jerusalem? CHina? Timbaktu?
Location will help a bit with an answer.

Where? How many people? What kind of foods are you planning to serve?
Cake and soda for twenty in a yishuv in the Shomron will cost less than cholent, kugel, sushi and fire poppers for four hundred in the Five Towns.

Does the Shul have 25 members or 500?
Start with a budget, then work from there.

I spent about 400 shekels on food for a kiddush for about 150 people in a shul in Jerusalem, including kugel and cakes.

Since this all depends so heavily on location, is there any way you can ask your shul's kiddush committee (or whatever they call themselves) to find out what the ballpark cost is?
Or ask someone else who recently sponsored a kiddush for the names of their vendors and then you can get a price quote?

Here people don't make hot kiddush, so it's always cold only. A small one is about $200, a large one about $500 - number of people depends on the shul obvs
Namings
Our namings we paid about 100 euros sans deco price as you asked (I assume you mean naming because you say party planning, but few here do deco except for a huge bm). For the brissim about 200 euros. We always had the room at shul free.

Are you making it yourself, or having it catered.
As far as cakes, cookies, and fruit it can be very simple or very fancy.
How much do you want to spend, and work the food around the budget.
Making your own parve cholent and kugel shouldn't cost that much.
Bakery desserts could get expensive, but if you bake and freeze it could be done. Herring is open the jar and serve, also not a big deal.
Check if your shul has a policy that everything must be catered to insure kashrut.

In Brooklyn most places charge around $10 pp for a basic kiddush package that includes cholent, kugel, gefilte fish, basic cake platters, paper goods, etc. Herring might be an extra $1 pp. Waiters are extra, usually around $75-$100 per waiter, and for that size crowd, you'd want 3 waiters. Out-of-town will likely be more expensive. Fruit, salad, etc., is also not included and priced separately.
