many people start with the rice baby cereals (gerber makes one) that you can mix with breastmilk or formula. You can give a tbsp or two at first, then once your baby starts getting used to it you can give more. You can also give the baby-food jars of fruits and veggies (or make your own mashed baby food) and give those, just a little at a time and then more as your baby starts to want more (you can do 3 meals a day and still continue nursing).
I read through so many books and they say all different stuff about the how much and the what and the whens about solids. It gets so confusing so basically I just made up my own schedule with what worked for my baby and me.
Some people skip the whole mashed baby food puree stage and go straight to "real" food (baby-fed weaning). Personally I tried it at first but was too worried my baby was going to choke- he still tries to swallow stuff without chewing sometimes and often tries to stuff waaay too much in at once.
