My 19 month old just started in preschool and I need ideas for what to send for her lunch each day. Up till now, I've been sending her a sandwich--peanut butter and jam or cream cheese--and fruit, but her morahs say she just picks the jelly or filling out of the sandwich and doesn't really eat it, so they want me to try sending something else, not a sandwich.

No meat allowed at school. She doesn't like yogurt or plain cheese very much. What can I send that has some protein and isn't too messy? She can use a fork/spoon, but she's still little and anything too saucy or liquid ends up all over her shirt... I'm really stumped for ideas some reason.

I prefer to avoid buying lots of processed and packaged food or snacky things...she already gets pretzels for snack twice a day at school.

What about finger size pasta with cubes of turkey?
Sliced hard eggs and home fries?
Frittata muffins?
Avocado with quinoa?

Dr Pragers makes different kind of little patty things. I think there's a squash one and broccoli. They're cute shapes but it's been a while since I've bought them.

My preschoolers often enjoy having lots of little things - I got lunch trays with dividers, so they can have cubed or sliced cheese, baked tofu, sautéed veggie sausage crumbles, mini quiche/fritatta, pasta with parmesan (can be messy), along with fruit, edamame, steamed carrot sticks, sliced cucumber, etc.

When I cook in the evening I try to think about what I can make and set aside for lunches.

These are great suggestions-- I don't know why I never thought of eggs! I may try a small omelet tomorrow because she usually eats that really well when I serve it at home.

For those who suggested tofu: how do you prepare it?

Cottage cheese is a good idea too that I hadn't considered.

Thanks all!

You can make little vegetable egg muffins/kugel/frittata thingies.
Stuffed mini peppers with tuna or egg salad
Mini black bean/lentil burgers, or mini fish burgers.
Cut fruit with cheese cube
Cut veggies with hummus to dip
Celery with peanut butter and raisins (ants on a log)
