If needed let him repeat in preschool.
A friend of mine had her DS repeat kindergarten, the year before 1st grade.
She was his teacher the second time around.
He was the youngest in the class, made the cut off date by 1 day.
If he was born less than 12 hrs later he would not be allowed to start nursery that year.
She just told him, you have to be 6 before school starts and that's the rule of the school. He was fine with that.
He was not up to parr academically in kindergarten.
Nursery and pre-k no problem, but when it was time to read, he just wasn't ready.

My DD was in the same situation, except the school wouldn't let her repeat.
I knew she wasn't ready for 1st grade,but they insisted since she was reading both English and Hebrew and doing simple math.
I knew she wasn't ready to sit for so long and listen, and she was the youngest in the class.
Again if she would have been born a few hours later...
She had the worst time in first grade.
She would sit on the floor under her desk and use her chair as a desk and try to do the work on her own without listening to instructions.
Of course most assignments were done wrong.
Failed first grade. Since I didn't want her to feel bad I switched her to a different school.
The principal tested her and said no to 1st grade, since she could read and do math at a 2nd grade level.
Eventually she got a hang of school, but it took a long time and a lot of support.
She learned on her own how to play the system and learned most things on her own.
This same girl many times corrected her high school math teachers when they made mistakes in solving algebra, etc. She would sometimes teach the girls a different way to solve the problem, leaving her teachers dumbfounded.
