We are going to Los Vegas and I don't know much about it. Help me plan!
Specifically, things to do! We are not interested in casinos. Hope to drive out to Grand Canyon -- do we book a tour? Would love to do outdoorsy things.
Car Rental - any ideas - as cheap as possible please.

thank!

Well if your going with children, circus circus hotel has a really cool indoor amusement park that's very reasonable. Their room rates are also cheaper if you don't mind not staying in a fancy hotel. Also, if your going with kids make sure they don't look up when walking in the street because there are signs and billboards all over the place advertising prostitution with pictures of practically naked woman.

It's Las Vegas. If you're not interested in shows or casinos or clubs maybe you should stay in Phoenix or Scottsdale? closer to the Grand Canyon, there's some kosher food, and there are some nice hotels there too

can't help with the grand canyon but you can visit the hoover dam, red rock canyon and valley of fire state park.
if you want to stay on the strip vicinity and have a kitchen stay in vdara or the signature at mgm or you can just stay off the strip. there are kosher restaurants off the strip and 2 coffee beans that are entirely kosher in the venetian (drinks, prepared dairy sandwiches and salads). you can drive to death valley or zion or Bryce or joshua tree but those aren't short drives so I wouldn't do that. it's about a 5 hour drive to the south rim on the grand canyon so that's not a day trip. you could helicopter or fly depending on your budget

There's a beautiful area nearby called Red Rock Canyon. Otherwise, rent a car and head for the Grand Canyon, and stop at Hoover Dam along the way. Also know that the Grand Canyon has a North Rim, which is closer to Vegas but may be closed in the winter, and a South Rim, which is farther but has more options. There's also a cheesy West Rim with the see-through glass thing that they rip you off to go out and stand on and look down; don't go there!

I went to the Valley of Fire when I went to Vegas . I was there for about 4 days and didn't gamble even once. There are so many shows to go to and just visiting hotels such as the Venetian and the Palazzo and Bellagio was interesting in itself. We went to a circa de seloi show ( don't know how to spell it) and to some variety shows etc. when I was there the Pyramid hotel had an exhibit on the Titanic which was really interesting. But I actually enjoyed the Valley of Fire the most from the entire trip. Also the Jerusalem restaurant and the Chinese restaurant were great too.

I believe the north rim of the grand canyon is closed in the winter. You can drive to the South Rim, but it's pretty far from las vegas.

Can anyone give me any advice re: renting a car? do I just go to expedia.com and pick the cheapest one? does it make sense that it says $40day or is there a catch? I never did this before.

No worries. Have fun, I love vegas. You can rent a car at the airport but we usually sign up for the car rental while booking the trip.

Car rental there is pretty cheap. They have loads of shuttles from the airport to the rental terminal and some are off site so you need to take another shuttle but it is all super easy and not at all time consuming. JUst search online carrentals.com from Las Vegas airport.

You can PM me for more info on my itinerary when we went. We did a day trip to the SOuth Rim of the grand canyon supposedly one of the best viewpoints. It is a 4.5 hour drive - very very boring drive but so worth it. YOu can do helicopter tours or bus tours but they are expensive. Car rental is the best especially since you get 4.5 hours together in the car Wink
At the south rim you park by the visitor center ($30 parking) and then there are shuttles to different viewpoints and the village. You can walk from the visitor center to one the first viewpoint (I think it is called MAthers point) about a 5 minute walk then from there to the geology museum, another viewpoint, about a 15 minute walk along the edge - it really is gorgeous and an incredible view. THen you can catch the shuttle from there back to the car or further to more viewpoints and the village. It really depends how much time you want to spend there.

Each hotel in Vegas is different and cool each in their own way. SOme are fancier than others but if it is just beds you need take the cheapest one and then walk around to tour each hotel - each one is like a mall.
Take comfy sneakers and plenty drinks - DO NOT buy drinks in the hotels. Stop at CVS or walgreens on the strip and buy there - literally $2 cheaper!
All coffee beans are Kosher (cholov stam) and have kosher salads and sandwiches.

We are really not gamblers at all. In fact my husband hates it and I just can't be bothered for it. We gambled for maybe 10 minutes out of our 7 day trip. There is LOADS to do there.

Though from my experience one also can't look down at the sidewalk as similar advertising materials are printed on cards and scattered on the sidewalks.

In that case just don't go to Vegas with kids. Totally not worth it.

Just putting this out there for future vacationers: we did vegas and here were some things we did and tips
-we chose not to stay on the strip and were glad. We stayed in the Elements - it had a full kitchen, huge rooms, complimentary breakfast with enough kosher stuff to full up on. If we had stayed on the strip the parking and getting thru traffic would have been hard for us. Also it is overwhelming!
Buy water bottles in a drugstore or supermarket instead of at tourist sites
Bring really comfy shoes!
Some fun off the strip things we did included:
Red rock canyon - calico tanks trail and scenic driving trail
Hoover dam tour and historical railroad trail (close to each other )
Downtown Summerlin (including ice skating rink and bowling )
Ton of fun!
