My MIL does that. Her kids love them, but DH and I think they're just okay. If you want to make them taste more like sufganiyot, add 1 T lemon juice and 2 t. rum per kilo of flour. That's what turns challah dough into sufganiyot dough.

Although I don't use a challah dough recipe, I also never used rum in my sufganiyot- why is it necessary? Not sure I used lemon either but I have a lemon tree so that's easy to add...

You don't HAVE to use rum, but rum or brandy are what give it that special flavor.

So I made them. They came out fine. I am not a huge sufganiot fan in any case, so it was more for my kids, just to be yotzeh. Good enough.
