I haven't heard of a name with "shemesh" as a root, but any of the names with "or" as a root (light)* would feel related to me. There's also Keren as a name, meaning ray (of light).
*Or, Ora, Liora, Meira, Tair, and those are just what jump to mind for me.

What about Solika? She was Moroccan, I believe.

For a boy, you could always go with Shimshon, which comes froom the same root as shemesh (sun).
Or with a name that has to do with light up such as Meir, Yair, Uriel, Uriah, Oriah, Uri, Ori, Or.
For a girl, a name having to do with light sounds like a good idea - Ora, Leora, Orly, Oriyah, Or, Ori, Tair, Meira.
Or that has to do with rays of light - Keren, Alumah.
Or star (since the sun is one) - Kochava.
I know some of these names are common in Israel where I am, but probably not in the USA.

Not related, but for a boy Sol could be short for Solomon.
My daughter goes to school with a girl named Oriah (maybe related to sunl?) Her friends call her "Oreo".
Sorry, my Hebrew is not that good, so I'm not sure of root words.

Oria sounds nothing like Oreo.
Sol is a very classic Sefardic name, I love it.
