It's very NOT socially acceptable to do that.

I have a child on the autism spectrum and I could totally see him doing this one day. I constantly pray that he only encounters people who are dan l'kaf zchus. When people's behavior is so out there, I generally try to be sympathetic and assume there's some underlying reason why they are being so out there.

OP here
I googled the gift online and at least ten stores sell it. Most of these stores would give you store credit if you show them your drivers license.

The only scenario where this is remotely acceptable is if the recipient is ill or disabled in some way and you bought them something to ease their life M. Then I'd want to know they got something they really want and will be useful to them.

totally rude and ungrateful. playing devils advocate, what if they are financially struggling and that its painful to have some brand new item wasted, so much so that their desperation leads them to do this. so sad. I hope that isnt the case.

The way it was done is rude..
I do think asking if there is a gift receipt to be able to exchange it is normal.
Do you really want to give someone something they have no use for?
