I use real china, cutlery, and glasses.
But I only use the large dinner plate from my China. The rest of the table setting dishes I use disposable (appetizer plate, dessert and soup). This way the table looks beautiful when you sit down and I have less to wash.

A couple of years ago, I dropped the whole stack of my China dinner plates (a set of Noritake I inherited from my grandmother A"H.) Since then I bought an inexpensive set of dinner plates that coordinate with the pieces from my set. It actually looks nice, without much worry about breakage. I guess the worst has already been done by me.

So I set the table with dinner and salad plates, napkins, glass stemware, forks, spoons, knives. I love setting a formal Shabbos table. My kids learned to handle china/glassware by the time they were three, and my experience has been that adults break dishes just as frequently - perhaps more - than kids do.

We use real china, stemware and flatware for Shabbat. I rarely use disposables, and wouldn't ever on Shabbat for just family (maybe if we were hosting a major function). Very young children have fun plastic plates, but mostly because they like them rather than to avoid breakage.

I'm wiped out on Friday night, so dh usually sets the table before kiddush. We all pitch in to set the table for Shabbat lunch. At seudah shelishit, we are more casual and just bring out plates as we need them.
