If you don't use their recommendation then you might not be able to paint it. If you so desire. It might not look so nice even if you try. Just speculating. Anyone has experience with this?

I'm sure there's some trial and error involved, where you're going to have some pretty horrible results at first.
Still, the reviews are very good, and Mod Podge has an excellent reputation. I've never been unhappy with any of their products.
It's a pretty cheap investment for a a fun project, so go for it. If you don't like the way it works with the melts, you can always wash it out and use it for chocolate or sugar icing decorations.
