Hamilton Beach makes phenomenal crock pots.
Look for one that has manual controls, without any automatic shuts offs.
An oval crockpot is very useful for fitting in all different types of food.
What size are you looking for? How many people do you want to be able to feed from your crockpot?

I actually have this one for many years and love it but I see it's only available now for $35 on prime, if you click other offers in the link below.

I find Hamilton Beach to be the best. I have them in several sizes.

Do these work for Shabbos? My father said something about needing a separate base in order to be okay...?

Yes they have separate crocks that go into the metal electronic base pot.

You should watch for deals. I've recently bought (on Amazon) 2 crockpots (one 7 qt., one 8 qt.) for $15-$18 dollars each. One a Hamilton Beach which I've been using and one a Crockpot brand which I've put away (couldn't resist it for $15) either for Pesach or in case of other need.
