About 1.5 liters of olive oil in a 3l tin was left out overnight with the lid off.

Anyone know if I am halachically obliged to chuck it or if I can pour it into something else to check it's ok and then still use it? Chucking it inappropriately would be Baal tachit I guess.

I thought there was a thing about not using uncovered water and wasn't sure if I applied to oil.
Thanks for the replies

The thing about water has two reasons. Kabbalistically, there was concern that a ruach hara (bad wind) would blow on it.

The other one was very practical. In the desert, snakes would come into the house at night where it was cool, and drink out of the water jugs. If venom from their fangs dripped in, someone might get sick. There was also a very real chance that a scorpion could fall in. If the scorpion was small, you could drink it by accident, and get stung in the throat. Surprised

Speak for yourself; there are people today (including us) who still try to be careful with this, even if it's not required according to the strict letter of the law. It's well-known that Rav Chaim Kanievsky is extremely, extremely careful in this area. Whether or not it applies to oil, or just to a few liquids such as water and wine is a separate question. But to post that the entire concept is essentially irrelevant today is misleading.

I'm not sure if Seas is referring to all liquids or just to water. I have heard of this only in regards to wine and water and whoever I know is very makpid on it .
