I have been assigned the dinner for the last night of shiva for friends. Usually I send something for the freezer without taking a specific night but I figure by the end of shiva their freezer might be quite full. I normally make lasagne or baked ziti or chili or something along those lines. I also figure by the end of the week they need something "different" to eat. Any suggestions? The one caveat is that my friend hates anything spicy. TIA

Soup.
With fresh crusty rolls and a nice refrigerator friendly salad.

This. And add some feta cheese (on the side or in the salad) for protein.

I like the idea of soup but another friend is making that for another night (and using my go to recipe!). Does anyone have a really filling soup recipe?

Mushroom barley, red lentil, butternut squash, beef and barley, white bean vegetable. Any of these appeal to you?

Split pea

Peal and chop onions and carrots.
1 cup split peas to 6-8 cups of water
1/4 cup barley
Bay leaf
Celery
Salt
Spices, look through cooking websites and pick your favorites.

I never bother soaking them, I usually just let it simmer for at least 2 hours.

Do a google search for vegetarian split pea soup.

If you cook it then refrigerate it, it thickens. I prefer it reheated. You may need to thin it down.

I love it with lots of onions.

My mother served it with oyster crackers.
