My 8-year-old son is very bright but shy, and has sensory issues. He also doesn't love sports. (He likes swimming, though.)
He gets very overwhelmed and disoriented in a big, busy, noisy day camp. Are there any small camps, perhaps a woodworking camp or some other specialty, where there is a smaller crowd and more low-key activities?

I would look for a backyard camp - you can find for almost any age - keep an eye out in the periodicals for advertising. see if you can find a friend to go with - its hard to go alone - just check out references.
call his rebbe , some have an idea of were the kids are going - or can advise on good ideas or who is still looking for a place so he can go with a partner.
Definitely not the big camps. There are some smaller 'big' camps - like chaveriim - its primary - 3rd (with 4th in its own small group). There are still lots of sports and a few bunks but its not a huge camp where the younger kids get lost with the big kids. I liked it for my kids when they were younger.
Merry go round camp. Team up with a few mothers and each mother takes a few days. Each mother is responsible for a trip and project. Everyone pools money to be split between activities. I know kids who hate sports whose mothers did this and it worked out very well.

These are good suggestions, thank you!
If anyone knows of a specific camp like what I described, please chime in. Meanwhile I'll start with these suggestions. Thanks!

it focuses more on workshops and stuff, if I remember correctly. I was gonna send my 10 year old there last summer but they didnt' have room since it's a small camp.

I don't remember exact details, so your best bet is to speak to them directly.
Good luck!!

I inquired about this camp for my son who sounds similar to your son. I was really considering this camp. At the end I found out about a rebbi who makes a day camp in westgate for boys that age. That worked out very well for my son.
