Absolutely many people dont use the Lakewood "heimeshe" doctors. Do whatever works for you and your family. Some like the Jewish drs becauseof mutual culture or convenient hours or whatever. Some prefer others. People are getting caught up on the dr thing.
Recently I was in,Dr Shaniks office and I met a lovely chassidishe lady who had recently moved to tr right outside belz. She does not drive, and she was complaining how there are no stores closer than a mile walk. No drs anywhere nearby, and she had to wait on hold to get an appt for 30 minutes and then pay a fortune for car service just to see if her kid had strep.
She said to me that everyone they spoke to was gushing about how TR is a vibrant Jewish community, but no one told her that its basically an extension of Lakewood.
Thats it im saying.
. Thank you!!!! This is why I brought the subject up!!!!!! Not try to push ppl away from Toms River just was try to make them aware of that!!!!

No, I'm looking for a good pediatrician who has a small practice and will see us every time. It seemed like chayelle knew someone like that so that's why I asked

The problem is that every time you start with a pediatrician with a small practice, pretty soon it gets full. That's just the nature of things in Lakewood. I happen to use Dr. Shanik's practice, but sometimes I get appointments in the River Ave office, and when DD was little I used to go to the Brick office, in order to get all her well-visits in on time.

DD had fever this past Sunday, and I didn't get an appointment for her till Monday night! If I would've suspected strep, I could've just taken her to the lab for a culture, but I didn't think that was the issue (it wasn't).

I'm on the fence about the immediate care places that open up. My sister is a pediatrician (not in Lakewood - I wish!) and she says they are often staffed with people that are not so experienced, and she has heard of all sorts of mistakes....though sometimes they can be good. Hard to know.

I understand now. Thanks for clarifying.

I think part of why I was having such a hard time understanding was your many exclamation marks. This amount of exclamation marks are often used when there is danger or rage, and I was reading you're just wanting to make people ''aware'' so I couldn't reconcile your tender intention of making people aware, with the many exclamation marks.

last poster was exactly on point. See Belz opened their own school and does have a Rav and will have a mikva. They got the L shuttle to drive them 3x a week for shopping but what if you need a dr, dentist or a potato peeler another time? and then you get the people that moved another 10 minute drive into TR, they'll be even more restricted.

Move with pleasure just know that all the things we krectz about in Lakewood like traffic, school acceptances, peer pressure to conform, dr hours etc are just as much in TR and Jackson because it is just an extension of Lakewood.

I don't see how this is different from any comparison of a suburban community vs. living in the city.

I would imagine that if a Chassidish family moved from Boro Park to Monsey, they would have similar issues - no nearby shopping, offices, etc...

It will be harder and harder to find those small medical practices as time goes on. With all the new insurance regulations, small practices will become unaffordable. The only way doctors can earn enough to cover their costs is to pack in as many appointments as they can. And then they spend half the time talking into their computer instead of to the patient. Ah, the joys of Obamacare!

I live in an area where health care is delivered by a monopoly that services three counties. Believe me when I say, I would never go back to the east coast model of single practitioners. Referrals to specialists are smooth and quickly accommodated, medical records are easily accessed, immediate care is just that. I can do a walk in for my mammogram or a simple xray. If I get referred for a MRI today, my appointment will be immediately booked as often as the next day. Integrated data solutions means that the woman at the front desk knows if my my insurance will cover a specific test and how much money I'll be responsible for paying. It also means that I can do comprehensive research on a specialist or a practitioner, and I can access this info in the waiting room at any number of computer stations. Physicians in this monopoly make a good living wage their first year (90-100k plus benefits) and don't have to raise cash from patients for equipment. The costs of delivery of these services are about 25%-30% lower than the same services in the metro area for sole or small group practices. I can also book my apts online and have access to all of my medical records online. On the average Dr apts last an hour if necessary,no such thing as a rushed15 minute apt.

FYI jackson does have their own NPGS kosher grocery, brendas clothing, kids clothing ect and before you know it TR and Jackson will have it all. Most schools I know are far out, I live in Lkwd and my dd's school is out of Lkwd.
Everyone moving to TR and Jackson know exactly where they are moving to before buying a house there. I dont get this thread.

I was going to say the same thing. Im sure that people, especially the chaddidush ones where the ladies dont drive, knew they werent moving to 13th ave. Im sure they checked out the houses and saw how far away they are. I would hope they spoke to neighbors or drove around to see the closest stores, shuls, etc

You'd think, right? But then there are posters on Imamother who come on here asking questions about the very basics, completely clueless, then move in and come back on within weeks complaining about the school situation, the lack of nearby stores, the difficulty getting around, and the lack of like-minded neighbors.

I don't get it at all, it's like they hear "cheap housing" and "established frum community" and abandon all practicality. I totally get the OP, just don't quite know why she seems to be taking this as a personal affront.

I've said this before.. I think this is more of a chasidish phenomenon for whatever reason. I for one am moving to TR, but I am well aware that I can't walk down to the block to the grocery. Duh....

Ok I think some clarification is needed here. The belz kehilla initially didn't assur driving for women in Lakewood. The belzer rebbe was asked multiple times and didn't sa y no. Then they kept asking again and again until he gave an answer that was not a flat out no.

Many belzer that moved out to Lakewood and tr were planning on driving. The issur started way after many moved. So the ones who were planning to drive are angry. To say the least. And they are stuck living in a nice house but the shopping and getting around is horrendous.

The shuttle only goes once a day. 3xs a week. The L bus that has route in west fat and other places in Lakewood refuses to cross the 70 and they are giving the shuttle company a lot of hardships.

So they are left high and dry. It's not easy. We take car services and manage. Bh my kids are very happy here. I'm happy with my place here. I have wonderful neighbors. I do believe things will get better. Eventually a mall will open near this area as a lot of people already live here.

It's a culture shock. If you stick it out it will get better.

I am planning to drive once my kids get old enough that they won't make an issue of the driving.

For now it is what it is. As all things in life"gam ze yaavor" look for the good and you'll find them.

If you don't drive you need to remember that car service will cost you a ton. They do eliveries though. Sox by the dozen delivers as well as many other different types of stores. Including groceries. If you need a specialist you will need to travel. So I need to see a nuerologist I have to drive more then an hour away from my house. I'm making an appointment for when my dh is available to take me.

Thanks, I drive. Wouldn't dream of moving to TR otherwise. As far as the Belz issur to drive... well that's a real shame.

NJ is a particularly horrendous state to practice in because it's very easy to file malpractice suits against doctors, thanks to our "wonderful" NJ State regs. Therefore, malpractice insurance for NJ doctors have high premiums. So better doctors don't tend to practice in this state, unless they are working for large healthcare systems and are indemnified, but large healthcare systems tend to become unwieldy and don't provide the best service.

That's why people like to use the frum doctors. They are a better caliber of medical professional than you'd usually find in Small Town, NJ. They live here because of the infrastructure of the frum community. So their practices become inundated (and NOT only with Jewish patients!) Eventually, that's going to mean more medical practices opening up (because CHEMED and other large-scale healthcare facilities are frankly awful) but in the short term, there will be shortages.

Dear OP,

I just re-read your original post and saw this, ''This is bugging me to no end!''

So now I'm curious what bugs you about it. Are you mad that they're moving to those places? Would you prefer they move to Lakewood proper?

I work in health care compliance. Which means I speak to many doctors but I am not a doctor myself. It does give me a lot of insight into how doctors think.

I don't buy into the "Dr. worship" thing. I use Westpark and I'm thrilled. Barely ever a wait. Nice, competent staff. Familiar with the frum community. No, they're not a frum practice, but so what? Works for me.

I started out by Westpark. They are nice there, though I never pushed to see Dr. Sasson (and from what I understand there is dr. worship there as well!!)

I love the fact that my dr checks my kids ears and says "I see a tzaddik in there"!
besides for the fact that my dr is a tzaddik in his own right, I believe he has been given a lot of extra siyata dishmaya.
