It's fun but exhausting. Ceilings are especially difficult.

It's not as easy as it looks.

I think washing them is the hardest. I've always managed with a brush extension and a good step ladder.

One more question...which paint do I use on the ceilings? The bedrooms I'm not touching but the kitchen ceiling has noticeable splatters from some of DDs kitchen escapades so that has to be painted. Semi-gloss?

For the walls...satin? Eggshell? Semi-gloss?

Thanks again everyone!

I've only had the ceilings professionally painted and they used flat.
On the walls, it depends on your preference. In high-traffic, splattery areas (kitchen, bathroom) you'll want more of a glossy finish (semi-gloss) for easy cleaning. In the hallways, bedrooms, dining and living room, less glossy is considered more elegant.

This guide https://www.houselogic.com/rem.....uide/ sums it up nicely. And as sourstix said, moldings are done with semi-gloss too.

She means that when you need to repair the walls, any imperfections or holes, you will spackle it (fill with plaster) and then you sand it so that it becomes smooth and level with the rest of the wall. Sanding creates a huge mess! But I found that a good vacuum cleaner sucks it all up and then you just wash with Mr. Clean and water.

Skip the ceilings for now. A good color would be the lightest shade of your wall color. Though I've seen some beautiful brightly painted ceilings.

Pause explained it well. If you want you can skip this step. Just prime and paint

Yes.
We went to a paint store (Benajmin Moore) and they guided us to buy the correct products including primers, paints etc.
Brushes and such we picked up at home depot.
It was hard work and took us 3 days with my husbands coworker assisting us as well but we worked out that including all the paint and supplies, my husband taking 2 days off work as well as paying his coworker, it was still cheaper than paying someone to do it for us!
We saved about $1,000. And we had a lot of fun as well.

And the million dollar question...the apartment is big so the last 2 quotes I got were for almost 4K. Is it really worth the time, energy, etc to save $1,000? I'd still need to hire someone to do the hard places like the inaccessible ceiling above the staircase, etc.

I can't decide!!

How about hiring day workers by the hour to do it? It will be way cheaper than a painter.

Its a gamble taking day workers. You never know who it is. Are they good. Do they have any idea of what this entails? And more that I would be willing to discuss via pm.

In short BE CAREFUL!

I think you would save more than that unless you are also paying a coworker and your husband will be losing pay.

Maybe commit to trying one small room and if you don't like it, you can hire someone. It also doesn't need to be all or nothing.

I can take as long as I want, but ideally want it done by Pesach.
