Argg...I hate having people pull over cars and overcharging by making up a story that sounds plausable...this just happened to my husband...I know obviously we weren't supposed to have the money but even if the work the guy did (I'm a parking lot mind you) was legit it was such a rip off

Please clarify your post because I don't understand. Who pulls over cars? Can't you say no?

Wasn't with my hubby at the time...he said he was at a red light and this guy told him he's as mechanic and friends with cops etc...we could have gotten major ticjets...the airbag could have blown up ..tgings were misaligned...he claims to have fixed it all (I'm half an hour- in my mind no way he's legit) ..mind you the issues he came up with have been seen by cops for the past few years...I made it clear to hubby that HE has to take it to our regular mechanic...I need the car to be safe as well be traveling for yt

Are you saying a guy walked up to your hubs car at a stop light and offered to fix your husbands vehicle? What was this nameless repair for? What problem did it solve?

Seriously, I have a mechanic I trust, I've used him for 26 years. I'm certainly not going to believe some stranger at a stop light and then pay him to fix an imagined repair.

Thanks for validating my feelings...I know that there was an issue that this guy claimed to fix...yay so he screwed my bumper but for more than 500 bucks...neither I not the previous bumper were pulled over for a loose front bumper and how many people drive around with bumpers missing

Ha!! When my DD started driving I gave her my old Ford escort. It had a wonky front bumper. First thing I did was show her how to tighten the fasteners that held it on the vehicle. I can't imagine paying someone $500 to tighten a screw or replace a fastener.

O.o here...well guess that is what happens when men don't know the first thing about cars

Or when they don't know how to say no.

A stranger stopping you at a red light should be told "thank you for your concern. I will have my mechanic repair it."

Hopefully. Did you discuss it with him? Be careful not to put him down. He needs to know he has the right and ability to say no to everyone except law enforcement.
