Hi,
I have several loads of laundry to do today (for my children). I ran out of detergent and am wondering whether ammonia could be used instead of regular HE detergent. Thanks!

I wouldn't. It's very harsh. It might cause irritation if you wear garments that were washed in ammonia.

I dont know. I was told to use ammonia in the wash after a lice infestation. But this was in addition to detergent.
And don't mix ammonia with bleach - it's dangerous.

I'd sooner use dish soap, or maybe baby shampoo- I've used both at different times for handwashing delicates or removing stains.

I would.I have, but not in a HE washer. Reset the machine to rinse a second time after each load is done. Do NOT use shampoo or dish soap--they are way too sudsy to use in a machine, especially a HE.
