I want to knit a gartel for DH but I don't know where to start. Where can I find instructions? Last time I knitted something I was a child.

I imagine it's as easy - or difficult if you have no knitting skills - as knitting any scarf - only thin with tassels

From what they look like, I'd think they are crocheted, not knitted, but I certainly don't know for sure.

OP here - it looks quite easy to make, like a scarf. One of my concerns is also on the symbolic side. Are there any particular minhogim related to the gartel? Is there a specific number of tassels, a special width? Obviously the length depends on the persons size and I have seen different widths.
I don't want to ask DH because I want it to be a surprize.
I would really appreciate a step by step guide, or a gartel kit with the right needles, etc.

You need to use black thin yarn. If you go into a Jewish owned sewing store they can guide you. I know that in boro park there is someone that has a store. I don't know where or who. My mother knitted so many and has made so many. But I don't live in bp so I can't tell you. I could ask her I hope I won't forget.
