I'm a fan Smile Anyone else?

Isabel is a rich, slightly weird philosopher who can't resist playing amateur detective. She's a delightful character, and the books are well-written and capture the somewhat morose charm of Edinburgh.

What a coincidence! I just put a bunch of his books on hold at the library. I think the first few of some of his series.

I'll let you know when I make my way through them. Smile

I like them but I prefer the 44 Scotland Street series, particularly the earlier books. I'm actually re-reading one of the Corduroy Mansions books now Smile.

I've read them all, and I've read most of his books, though I don't remember them all that well. I do remember, I think it was in Tears of the Giraffe, it made such an impression on me, one breathtaking passage, when Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni gets pictures of his children, the first time in their lives.

AMS is a good writer. I don't like his hashkafos though. I don't want to do a spoiler on the latest 44 Scotland Street but I don't see things the same way he does.

OK, back to Isabel Dalhousie.

ETA: And if, the next time someone starts a waxing thread, I can find a passage I photocopied, I will transcribe Bruce's experience with waxing.

Really? Not really you're a geek, but that it's your favorite. Cute.

Are they comparable to Agatha Christie's?

I read the first four or five, but somehow they just kind of lost my attention. I liked them . . . but some of the interpersonal drama made me feel, well, kind of icky. As if I were a voyeur to a messy situation that, while scandalous in theory, had been watered down to "whatever" by the erosion of anything beyond the characters' self-absorption.

Oh yes, some of the characters can be very....precious. (I'm not thinking with a capital P.)

Or perhaps I just feel the inexplicable need for a character who has scored 97 percent!

So will Cat ever find a mensch?
And what happens if Charlie grows up and wants to be a priest or join ISIS?

Okay. Kant? Seriously? This is heavy stuff. Study

Enjoying it so far. I am tempted to confirm my suspicions about the mystery but I would not risk another spoiler situation today.

So far Grace reminds me of Miss Marple.
