Stories should be about regular people... without therapists.

And the stigma about going to therapy is persisting still. And we wonder why.

And no stories based in Israel or RL people wanting to go there. I cant even.

I'm sorry Yael, I find this contest to be anti what imamother is about. I know its a paid ad. But please. Some of these rules are outright put downs. We can do better than that.

I'm going to email them with my comments.

At first, I thought it's a Purim joke...though reading that it's a paid ad has me scratching my head in confusion. Please enlighten me: where in the world are children not living with any of these experiences we're required to exclude from our stories? Where in the world are children ensconced in a bubble of divinely orchestrated perfection?
It occurs to me the publisher is seeking stories of fiction. That's her prerogative.

Can't copy and paste because it came in a PDF, but I'll type it out because I feel so passionately about it:

- When writing, think about what the reader would be interested in. This is usually something they can relate to, like a nisayon someone overcame, a difficult experience with an unusual twist, a fascinating turn of events, or typical, everyday struggles that make readers feel normal for being human.

- All stories should be suitable for all ages. Some examples: no marriage, dating, pregnancy and birth, no informal contact between people of opposite genders, and no chinuch-related topics.

- Stories should not be based in Eretz Yisroel or people wanting to be there.

- No politics, chutzpah, or lashon hara.

- No implication that parents, rabbonim, or teachers are wrong in any way.

- Stories should be about regular people, without therapists or other drastic measures involved.

- No disrespect or making fun of any part of the Torah

- No technology for kids

- Every story should include formal or informal prayer.

- The characters should realize that Hashem is in charge in all situations.

- No modern lifestyle or anything that would give ideas to kids that something in their current life is not good.

- Keep in mind that we want to serve an extremely strict clientele. Anything that you think will be a problem, will probably be one, so don't include it.

- We are all children of Hashem; the proper way for a character to act is to keep in mind that Hashem runs the world. It should be clear in the story, either by spelling it out in the thinking process of the characters, or in their actions, for example by formal prayer (davening in shul) or informal prayer (while crossing the street). This is especially important while developing the hero in the story.

- A benefit of historical fiction is that you can discuss nisyonos that occurred during those times which would not be relevant today. Since there are a lot of nuances, if you have such an idea, confirm with us the specifics before starting it.

oliveoil, sounds like Satmar-oriented people trying to create a kosher literature book for elementary aged children.

(No EY, no technology, etc.)

Very strange list.
