I see all these advertisements for prices for internet for "1 year" terms, what happens after the first year?

By default, the price goes back up. But sometimes they extend the promotions, or if you call in and threaten to cancel, they may give you a new offer, though it's not guaranteed. Some people then cancel, wait a month, and then restart as new customers (sometimes in spouse's name).
