If you haven't gone yet, I'd recommend going via Springfield, MA, where you have the new Dr. Seuss museum and sculpture garden, and/or the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Maybe try Mystic, CT - I haven't been there in years, but it was great.
Boston, MA also has some great stuff - the New England Aquarium, and a Chlidren's Museum. Again, haven't been in years, but they were great.
Plymouth Village, also in MA was also fun.

Mystic is nice, but is somewhat out of the way if you're headed to NH. Boston is definitely a reasonable detour with lots of great activities.
