I have a family member on disability who got a letter from Social Security saying that she can't get it any more because they found a couple of savings bonds in her name, and it comes to more money than she is allowed to have. Oh, and she has to pay back all the money they gave her.

The bonds had been forgotten about by the family, but when they were found, they said they were payable to this relative OR to a parent.

So it looks like if the parents cash the bonds, the person should be able to present evidence to social security that she didn't and doesn't have this money.

But she doesn't want to move forward until she hears from someone who knows about these things that this is what will happen.

Someone said maybe call Chai Lifeline.

Any other ideas? Can't figure out who can give us an answer. Accountant? Lawyer? Advocacy group?

I don't know, but be careful with lawyers -- they often don't know a lot about these kinds of things. I worked with Medicaid applications for a while, and most of the cases my company got were ones that were messed up by lawyers.

It needs more than intelligence. It needs someone who knows the answers.

To carify, I think your relative is on SSI, because of disability plus her low income. If she were getting social security because of a disability, or age, or being a widow, there are no income restrictions.
How much do these bonds total?
