DD age 7 tells me at night she has scary thoughts, but can't/won't tell me any details that might help me figure out how to help. She has always had a little anxious personality. She is also going through a hard time with our recent divorce, which she is handling about as well as one could hope for but of course that's still very rough. So that's probably contributing to overall negative feelings.
Any ideas on how I can help her learn to cope with "scary thoughts" when I don't know what they are? Should I be concerned that she can't/won't tell me what they are, when in the past we've had pretty open communication? Should I try to find out what's bothering her or just stick to general support/advice?
O wise imamothers, help!

Play therapy, art therapy, music therapy, sand tray therapy, can all help her express what's bothering her. If you don't want to spend money on a professional, you could try getting a book on one of the above and see if you can work with her.
Almost forgot - animals! If you like 'em.

When my son was having nightmares but wouldn't tell me, I got him to draw them, then we could discuss them and take away the fear. Bh really helped.

I had this as a kid. Don't remember exactly, but I think they were morbid and death related thoughts.

You can help her come up with five happy thoughts that she can replace the scary ones with when they come.

I recommend getting her to see a professional. I had scary thoughts when I was little, and I could share with the child psychologist, but not my parents (and this is normal by the way, even if unsettling).
