So what positions do they take?

Many have long ongoing frustration in job searching.
One went into private tutoring.
One took a job in a different field.
Some probably make it in the public school system or other more intense/full-time positions.
Some just still don't have a great job but they're OK with that because they are just the second income and their cost of living is lower.

This whole thread is really getting me thinking.. My husband is in middle of doing special ed degree, but it seems like if we move out of town it's really not worth it?

1. If he's interested in full-time classroom teaching, especially in public schools, then there is usually at least normal demand in most places (doesn't mean it's easy to land the jobs, but they will always exist out there somewhere)
2. In yeshivas there may be more need for male teachers because the field has been female-dominated and some yeshivas are more comfortable with male teachers especially at older grade levels.

Philadelphia has good rates for special instructors- they have a 0-3 system called childlink, as well as a 3-5 year old system called Elwyn. Kids are seen in homes or in preschools/daycares, so you do have to travel around, but try to get kids in same zipcodes. Providers such as therapists and special instructors contract through agencies like in New York. If you are interested, here are a few agencies that you can reach out to regarding rates : Dynamicare, Goldstar Rehabilitation,Kutest Kids Early Intervention, Jaycare. Their are a bunch more but these are run by frum people. Let me know if you would need phone numbers. Hatzlacha!

Thank you so much! I would really love to know more about these programs! I'm sure I could google them but if you have specific contacts feel free to share Smile

Disclaimer: I'm not actually looking to move in the short-term future, I'm just trying to plan ahead for when the time comes to get an idea of what my options might be as well as what types of things I should work on way ahead (such as retraining, blogging, or other long-range ideas that have been put forth here that would have been too late if I really needed to move this year.)

I am in baltimore. I am not in the field but one of my kids has received some special ed services over the years. 1) we got through the local infants and toddlers program. Special educator came to our house once a week when kid was little to help. We had both people employed by the local school system as well as private agencies that were contracted by the local school system. 2) all the schools have resource rooms and are constantly looking for more staff. The city is growing, the schools are growing, and they need more staff. One of my kids has been on a waitlist for learning center services since the middle of the school year since they have so many kids who need their services. I know the cost is split between the parents and the school and I have heard it pays well. Don't quote me on this though. Its possible that they choose to keep the center understaffed because of the cost involved to the school. Not all the schools are constantly looking; some seem more stable than others. If you are seriously considering, I could give you contact info for the head of the learning center at both my kids schools, I am sure they can help you further.

Thank you Pumpkin amother!
Baltimore hadn't been on my radar before but if it's good for special ed then maybe it should be. Is the COL a lot lower than NY? How does tuition compare?

what about contacting a continuing education company and seeing if they might have work for you? That way you could give continuing ed courses without having to be a business person...?

also I know that a school near us has a learning specialist or interventionist- forgot what it's called but I think she writes up the IEPs and stuff, may be you can find a job like that?

What about moving to a place like Passaic which has much lower COL than Brooklyn but is commutable to SI or the Bronx?

Commuting to NY from Passaic is not easy especially for a mother who's used to flexibility. It could take up to an hour and a half to drive to the Bronx. Staten Island is better but it's still an hour with traffic. Midtown is the easiest commute with the most options.
Most special ed providers either do EI (try Kid Clan or Therapy Associates if you want to see what job prospects are like now) or they work for the school's resource room either for the school directly or through Catapult. I also know a few who ended up teaching regular ed, the tuition breaks and other benefits of working on their kids school schedule made it worthwhile.

I didn't read all the responses so not sure if this was mentioned, but a friend in special Ed just told me they're thinking to move to NJ sometime down the road, and she completed coursework to become an LBA (licensed behavior analyst -- previously known as BCBA) because it pays pretty well in NJ (through insurance as opposed to BOE). It was another masters, and a certification test, she did it online.

Also seeker, aren't you certified in Wilson and fast forward? Do schools not hire private reading specialists to work in their resource rooms? Or parents can pay you to see their kid in school?

Sorry if all this was already addressed...
