Why are your inlaws getting involved in what you wear? Its between you and DH-unless DH is hiding behind them?

This has nothing to do with the rest of your family; it has to do with you. Tell your in-laws that you tried synthetic, but it's really uncomfortable and doesn't look good and is hard to maintain, and therefore you're going to try human hair. If you want to be really nice and think it will make a difference to them, you could still wear the synthetic when you go to visit them, but you shouldn't feel pressured to do so.

Looks like OP is looking for encouragement to keep wearing her synthetic, not to stop. (At least that is my reading...)

OP, do you know anyone IRL who wears synthetic? There are some that are very nice, you may just need some better tips on how to wash and wear it, or, you may need to look into a different wig. Some brands are better than others.

I'm not a synthetic wearer, but I do know several people who are happy with their synthetics.

I recently saw an advertisement in one of the women's magazines (not sure if it was Mishpacha or Binah) for a new brand synthetic. Maybe you can look into that.

In their family this is very important to them. Therefore, they asked me to wear it too.

Again, THEY asked you? What about DH? I know in-law relationships are tricky, but you need to answer to DH only, and even then, this is your mitzva and comfort. Was this discussed before marriage? If not, its not right for them to bring it up now. Im sorry if Im to harsh, and I know you want to fit in, but its not right of them to get involved. What are they going to ask you next?

I frequently wear a synthetic (Paula Young) sheital when I'm in a situation that I don't have to be dressed up because (1)they are much lighter and less heat retaining. (2)they are a lot cheaper and need less maintenance. I just throw it out at the end of the summer. Maybe the reason it looks horrible and feels frizzy is because of the brand you use. But of course if synthetic looked and felt like human hair everyone would wear them.

What company do you wear? There are "better more expensive" synthetics that don't look like synthetics. (They're not cheap- can easily be a few hundred dollars.)

I don't wear synthetic so can't provide any personal recommendations, but I know that there are very good synthetics around these days. I know a couple of people who wear synthetic and always look superb. If it's horrible and frizzy perhaps you're keeping them too long? How old is your wig? Was it like this at the beginning too?

They asked before we got engaged.

I sometimes wear synthetic sheitels. Norikos are pretty good but you need to buy new ones often. When they are fresh and new you can't tell it's synthetic.

Does it need to be replaced?

Do your in-laws' wigs usually look nice? If so, ask for advice about brands and maintenance.

Here's the thing about synthetics: they are disposable. Depending on how often you wear it, you may need to replace it every 3 months or so.

Given that this is a family minhag that you've adopted, try to focus on some of the advantages. For example, you can easily get a new shaitel several times a year, allowing you to change styles more easily than someone with an expensive human hair shaitel. You can avoid the whole styling runaround -- when it gets ratty, you throw it away.

Also, don't overestimate the positives of a human hair shaitel. I was always told that they were so much more comfortable, but I didn't personally find that to be the case. There are definitely some human hair shaitels that look nicer than synthetic ones, but I see that only at the top price points. A lot of mid-priced human hair shaitels don't live up to the hype.

Keep experimenting, and you'll probably find a brand or style that works for you.

Hatzlacha and yasher koach for upholding your DH's family minhag. You will indeed get a lot of schar for that!

Anyone have any practical advice or tips?

How to maintain and treat them?
How to wash it?

There are lots of good online companies, but you might want to start with something local. Of course, most shaitel machers have no interest in selling synthetics these days, so you have to be a little creative.

I don't know where you're located, Chavah, but I found an amazing source in Chicago: Fantasy Costume. If you live in Chicago, you've probably taken your kids there for Purim costumes. But they have a large storefront dedicated to wigs, including plenty of high-quality synthetics. I also discovered that they have a wig stylist who is there two days a week. Her services are free if you make a purchase, and I was very pleased with the cut she gave me.

Now, I'm assuming you're not in Chicago, but you might start by calling costume stores or theatrical suppliers in the nearest large city. You can also check local salons to see if they have a wig specialist on staff. For example, the ReVamp Salon in Minneapolis has one person who does nothing but wig sales and styling (again, I'm assuming you're not in MN).

Also, don't be afraid to buy a super-cheap shaitel from a discount storefront just to get a sense of whether you like the style or color. It will last about a week, but that will give you enough time to decide whether it's worth it to look for a similar higher-quality version.

Oh, and the thing about synthetics is that you really can't do much to hurt them. Just wash it in the sink with a little shampoo; shake it out; and let it dry on a stand. Don't use a hair dryer or curling iron. When it's dry, brush it a little and plop it on your head.

Just remember that if you're wearing your shaitel almost every day, you'll need a new one every 3 months or so.

If you post your location maybe posters can recommend shaitel machers that deal with synthetics.

Kanekalon is a good material. Jon Renau is a good brand. Mine is gorgeous, has been mistaken for human by professionals, and lasts years. BUT unless your husband warned you his minhag is synthetic pre marriage, it's a bit rich to demand it now.
