It's time for a new robe. For all my blather about maxi dresses being so much cheaper than "shabbos robes," my maxi dress died after a couple of seasons while my shabbos robes are still holding up after many years - though they get really boring after many years, especially since the designs were boring in the first place...

Anyway the one that died was starting to look unflattering. I was quite slim when I bought it but haven't been taking the greatest care of myself and I find that I keep sucking in to try not to look pregnant in my highish-waisted maxi dress.

And I was shopping online for a replacement and even though the dresses are not listed as maternity wear, many of the reviewers are using it as such. And looking great, but not the look I want.

Shabbos loungewear fashion advice, please. I'm tired of getting dressed up every week since my dress-robe died.

A couple of examples I've been eyeing:

(there are similar ones even cheaper but I like these colors)
https://www.amazon.com/gp/prod.....psc=1
(if that goes well as pictured then one might avoid needing a shell! I was also thinking that the flowers could help hide the tummy. But the waist shape still looks like it would have the same problem)

These kind of cuts hide my non pregnant stomach and hips. The halter top means I can get a big enough size without the top looking baggy.

My best shabbos robes are from jcpenney. Sundays they usually have crazy sales online. So if I know I need something I'll wait to order on Sunday.

I have this one that reminds me of one of yours:
https://www.amazon.com/Pxmoda-.....psc=1

It does have some pleating/extra material in the front, but the material at the stomach doesn't poof out, it lays against my stomach.

I do like the robes you chose. I'd look into getting your floral one when mine dies.

I have this in Olive Green:

ETA the fabric is great. I've been wearing it all summer and it's in perfect condition, washed beautifully, hung to dry.

The next question is how to not look dorky with a shell. When the tops don't go all the way to the shoulders, does the seam of the shell stick out funny? I always feel a little conscious of that. But so many of the dresses I like don't come with cap sleeves or wide shoulders.

Thanks for the links. The visual aids are helpful.

Wow how do you people find such nice dresses on Amazon? I'm always afraid the material will be too flimsy.

Has anyone had luck getting a winter robe (velour/velvet) on Amazon? Can you post links please?

Thanks

I would also like to know when the blazes the "cold shoulder" style is going to go away. One of my least favorite fashion trends ever, and it is EVERYWHERE!

Like I've posted before I like the halter tops and I think they look really good with the right color shell. I usually wear or make it into a crop top shell so less bulk at my waist and stomach.

I don't know your build but I'm petite at the shoulders and have lots of extras from my waist down. So dresses with sleeves usually fit me terribly. If it looks good on top it's too tight at the waist and hips and if it fits my waist and hips it's way too big on top.

Good luck! Let us know what you find!

For now I'm waiting for the long-sleeved one from Amazon to arrive and see if it works. I'm not getting my hopes up too high but the idea of something looking like it has a good neck, good sleeves, and a decent design is just so tantalizing.

The neck looks good and the plum looks pretty to me but there are no reviews... but with free Amazon returns, may as well just try it out. I ordered 5 dresses to try on and choose from for a total cost about the same as one robe would be in Boro Park.

Seeker, please let us know how the dresses turn out. Will you by any chance have them in 2 days (amazon prime?) because then I could still order and receive before sukkos...
I'd love a dress that doesn't need a shell...

I got something very similar for my DD. The neckline was a little open, so I took it in about 1/2 inch from each side, sewed a straight seem to the shoulder, and it was great. It also lifted it slightly, as the length was a drop long on her. The result was perfect. She loves it.

Amazon review:
Got two of these today (I had ordered two different designs to compare) https://www.amazon.com/gp/prod.....psc=1
I was optimistic about this one based on the picture. The fabric and designs are pretty nice. The sizing is weird. I ordered small, and they both look very large. Not very medium - large. And they said 3/4 sleeves - each one seemed different. One didn't even come to my elbows. The other one did just barely cover my elbows but I think that's only because it was so large. But it would be acceptable for some people. Except that it's so big. Alas it does not come in extra small Sad
It's OK, though, I don't think my no-shell fantasy is meant to be because I just discovered that without a shell you feel the waist seam a lot.
On the plus side, while you could wear this well as maternity, I don't think it would actually make someone look pregnant when they aren't unless they have a very pregnant-looking figure, which is unfortunately difficult to deal with in any outfit.

Also received this https://www.amazon.com/gp/prod.....psc=1
Did not live up to the picture at all. Didn't look like great fabric quality, I'm no maven but I bet the design/color would fade after a couple of washes. The waist is very high which makes it look much more like a maternity dress. The neck was too wide for me, but that's a personal issue because of the way my neck is shaped which is why I had high hopes for the first one I posted.

And this one https://www.amazon.com/gp/prod.....psc=1
Much higher waist than it looks on the model, total maternity wear. I did order a different similar one from a different brand whose picture makes the waist look lower and I think that if it indeed is lower then it should work well. But that one ships a lot slower.

One more says it's coming tomorrow but I doubt I'll have time to look at it until after YK.

HTH.

Most of these dresses are from Chinese sellers. Meaning theyre not just made in China like most stuff. But theyre actually sent in to Amazon fba directly from them and their factory, they go through no quality control. (that's why sizing is so off or it's a hit or miss with matching up to the actual pic.)

I've ordered maxi dresses from Amazon last season that I spotted in a local store for double the price. I'll try finding it.
