It's weird that we were away the second day of yomtov and I knew that regardless of what I eat or drink, I will become constipated because we were staying at relatives in their small house, little privacy, and 15 people using 1 bathroom. Is there a medical way to explain this? I always assumed that constipation was related to diet.

Most stomach issues are very closely related to stress..

I called my daughter's pediatrician when she had the same problem visiting friend's houses for the weekend. They said oh yes, she has "Camping Constipation". Presumably when camping you don't have a comfortable place to go. I suggested to my daughter that she should visit the rest room to try whenever they were out of the house (like at shul). That seemed to work.

I have this when I'm away.
I need dark and quiet in the mornings even at home and if the kids get up before I get going I'm usually out of luck and bloated and constipated after that.

Yup, "sphincter law." It only opens when you're relaxed. (Similar thing with labor btw.)
You can learn how to relax enough to use the bathroom outside of your home, if it bothers you enough to want to invest time and energy overcoming it.

Also, if you're holding it in, the water will get reabsorbed into the intestine and then whatever excrement is there will get harder and more painful to get out

Have this every time I go away. Even if it's to a hotel or to my mothers house. It's the "not being able to fully relax" that it happens.
