Are you looking for a point and shoot, a dslr or a fun camera like the new Polaroid?

We've been happy with the coolpix line. Don't know how much you want to spend.

Canon sells refurbished cameras with a one-year warranty. If you wait for black friday they might have them on sale.

There is a difference, one is those slim cameras and the other is the one with the lens popping out like a photographer

For a 12 year old first camera I would get a point and shoot. Definitely not a dslr. You can get a decent camera glut under a $100. Something from nikon, Canon or sony should be good for her.

The new Polaroid are made my fujifilm and immediately print out the picture rather than storing it on an sd card for later.

that sounds cool.......but I want a camera she can take on field trips, and general fun for her, so I guess the Polaroid will not work!

A lot of the cheap cameras require aa batteries which can really be a pain for the 12 year old and her mother who needs to make sure to have batteries in the house on the morning of the trip. When you check the specs on the camera you'll buy, you can see if it comes with a rechargeable battery. Also, you'll probably want to look for fun options like fish eye and makeup, cause the kids use that a lot
