I have at least that many a day.
Does your son eat lots of fruits and vegetables? Very little processed food?
If so, he's having many bowel movements for a good reason.
On the other hand, frequent bowel movements can be a sign of celiac or gluten insensitivity.
Without making your son too self conscious, it would be helpful to find out if his BMs are painful; and what the stool is like. For example, very frequent passing of hard, small stool can be a sign of spastic constipation.

Ask him if he's constipated or has diharea. Might be he's intolerant to dairy, gluten...

Is this a lot also for an 18 month old or are they expected to have more bowel movements?

If he's always had 3-4 a day then it's normal for his body. If this is new, you should check it out.

Depends on if this is new or not, if the stools are normal-looking, if he is experiencing GI pain or discomfort, or if there are any other concerning symptoms.
