I'm looking up questions and answers about chanukah for my kids and I came up with these two things. They seem to contradict with each other, don't they? Which one is it then?
Quote:
Who is allowed to say a blessing on the lights of Chanukah?
one who does the lighting himself,
one who does not light, but has someone else light on his behalf,
one who merely sees the Chanukah lights,
all of the above
and
If one lights a public menorah:
they need not light again at home,
they need to light again but not say the bracha,
they must light again at home with a bracha

I don't have an answer for you but 2 things come to mind

1)2 jews, 3 opinions

and

2) There are 2 popular accounts of the Chanuka story that I've seen in print--one where basically all the Macabbim die and Matisyahu avenges their death and then there's another one where Yehuda Maccabee is the hero an Matisyahu dies--but in neither one is Eliezer the eldest Maccabee (the famous old song about the Macabees). There are many contradictions throughout the 2 accounts, so contradictions do seem to be a theme.

I think this is probably straightforward halacha - either look it up in the Kitzur (something I was recently reminded of by my friendly neighborhood imamother) or ask your LOR. I think the halacha must be clear cut, one way or another.

As for the Chanuka story - since it happened quite a while ago, there may be some conflict as to what exactly happened; but I think the conflict is actually on the part of kindergarten Morah's who made up cute songs without doing any research.

I do remember learning the Chanuka story in Historia in school, but it's been a long, long time ago, so I wouldn't remember any details. I do remember, though, that all the Chashmonaim eventually died out, and the only one left was Miriam who married Hurdus, so there are no descendants, which is really so sad.
