My baby has had a stuffy nose and we used a pillow to prop him up. This helped his nose, and it wasn't so bad because he wasn't really moving yet.

He is just getting ready to roll over...he moves and wriggles a lot, and he arches his body in a way that he can now slide off the pillow and move his face directly under it.

So, of course, we took the pillow away as soon as we saw that. However, he has trouble sleeping now in his flat crib. I don't know if it's because the pillow was more comfortable or because his stuffy nose is bothering him more and he's no longer propped up....

What do I do? What do you do for a 4mo with a cold who can't sleep?

Put a relatively flat pillow (or a folded up towel) under the mattress to raise the mattress up a bit,but the baby will still be on a smooth flat surface.

How does the baby not slide down? Is it just a really small incline?

Raise the mattress and wait it out.
Part of life.

Edited to add that Raws advice below is great.

You should also use Little Remedies saline drops and suction his nose regularly, especially before putting him to bed.
Have a humidifier going throughout the night.
Cut up an onion, put it on a plate and leave it next to the crib overnight.

If you do all of the above he should be able to sleep much better.

Yes - the incline is not that high - try it and see if it works for you. This does the trick for me.
