Is there an official one?
Or what type of brush do people use as a Shabbos brush that meets the halachic criteria?
I have heard mixed things and am not clear what people actually use for children's hair?

We use a baby brush that is soft and doesn't actually go through the hair.

Available at religious stores and Amazon.
Although I've no idea why its different from any other hairbrush.

Idk if this applies to ppl with straight hair but we were told not to use a brush on shabbos, just smooth down the hair with fingers and put in a rubber. Maybe it's because we have super thick, knotty type hair, but even putting it into a ponytail usually results with a stray hair or two falling out.

It's the same brush as the "wet" variety. The bristles are extremely flexible. The purpose of it being a "Shabbos" brush is that it's dedicated only for use on Shabbos (so you're not using the same tool as during the week). It also comes with "instructions" (ie, the halachos) which explain the proper usage.
My DD is extremely sensitive to hair brushing. After trialing many brushes we discovered the wet brush and it worked for her. We were amused/surprised when she received the Shabbos brush as an afikomen present and it was the same product.
