Every handheld can opener that I have bought doesn't last long.
The little army style that they sell in Israel I have contemplated but don't know if they are safe for children.
Should I get an electric one?
What do most people use?
If anyone has a link to a specific model that you feel is worth investing in I would appreciate it.
So many times whatever I have breaks and then I don't have a real way to open my cans!
Any suggestions?

I have this one and love it! It's a little expensive but no sharp edges and stays clean because it doesn't go inside the can. I've had it for a few years and still going strong.

anon because I've given this as a gift I love it so much

Whichever one you get, it's always best to keep the Israeli type somewhere, just in case
They're cheap and unbreakable

I have the same problem as OP. I was just looking at this today. I have 4 can openers including this one. None of them work as good as the old fashioned ones. Why they messed with the design is beyond me.
I was thinking of getting an electric one. But what to do about yontiff.

Swing-away
We've had different ones, but I asked my mother for the one she had, probably since she got married. It opens to 180*.

Yes.
The one you have seems to work like a regular can opener, cutting between the lid and the can lips. That can leave a sharp edge on the removed top. We got rid of ours after DH nearly needed stitches from cutting himself on a lid.
The smooth edge can openers cut under the lip, so the entire lid lifts off with no sharp edges.
I know I'm not explaining it well, so here's an article doing a better job: http://www.finecooking.com/art.....above

I have this one also. I don't like it because it is hard to drain out the liquids, and it is difficult for cleaning ladies to use. I am not kidding about that. I train them to do this, and they can't get it. My mil also can't do it no matter how much explaining.

I use this to drain cans:

Ignore the price. I got mine for less than $5 at Amazing Savings.

I have colanders for this, but it is one more thing to clean.
I want an old fashioned can opener.

Yep. I Once bought half a dozen to give as gifts , wish I’d saved them for my kids because it’s the best. Have had mine over 35 years.

I had the clean edge one.
A) None of my kids could latch it on (once on, theuh could usually use it). I could latch it, but it came off multuple times per can if I didn't brace the can somehow.
b) There were cans it just wouldn't work on. It caught on the labels and shredded them, without moving smoothly. I often wouldn't know it didn't work until I tried to take the lid off and it wouldn't come. But I couldn't see which spots weren't done, so I had to go all the way around again.

Anyone know how to get an old fashioned one?
This is one retro design we need.

Just bought my second swing-a-way yesterday. Not sure how many years I had the first one, but over 10 for sure. I've bought many other brands before and they never lasted a year. Paid $11.95. I bought it at a restaurant supply store-it's the only brand they will sell.
