To make a long story short, it intrigued her enough to look into Judaism as more than just a cultural thing. She did not know that there are people nowadays who actually live that way, so she set out to Brooklyn to find them!

I love fiddler on the roof but in my personal opinion it does not portray Jews in the shtetl so accurately and positively

I don't know Hebrew that well. Can you explain me the ending in the yichud room? Why that depressed/upset face? I thought she finally agreed to marry him?

The director explains it.

I liked that it showed both the positive parts and the negative parts - it presented a very nuanced picture. A movie that showed only positive parts would be unrealistic and too cheesy.

Fiddler on the Roof is one of my favorite movies. Especially the songs - they are gems.

Aha now I get it. (Though I don't appreciate endings that leave you hanging)

Hate Fiddler, and love the shtetl as a place and concept.

I find most depictions of Jews "by Hollywood" obnoxious.

Thanks for this.
I never liked the ending, it felt so unecessarily depressing. But after reading the linked article I can appreciate the point she made about feeling multiple emotions at once.

You can either use the hundreds of free online sites, or pay.

Good movie, but from a halachik standpoint with regard to the hair covering, made absolutely no sense.

I felt like it portrayed orthodox Judaism as something that you need to run away, and orthodox marriages as loveless. Not such a positive light.
