OP, the more expensive electric kettles boil your water in zero time.

But I want one that boils the water before you put it in the kettle (with apologies to Issac Asimov)

Gah, I'd be afraid of not getting the vinegar out. I once tried scrubbing with baking soda, lots of rinses. My kitchen has those nice sensitive ground fault interrupter outlets, and I think the baking soda created some sort of conductivity, because when I plugged in the urn the fuse blew. It works okay in other places, but I had to get a new urn for the kitchen.

I think I have tried lemon juice. But weekly is way too much work for me. Plus so much time while the urn cools and get it clean and refill, all that time what do I do when I want a hot drink immediately?

I'm hoping one of our scientist amothers will tell us more about stainless steel.

Don't use baking soda- use vinegar as others have suggested. Just rinse afterwards a few times and you won't have any vinegar taste. We do this quite often because of the hard water in Israel.

You can also use citric acid, it avoids the hot vinegar smell.

We leave it on all week. Once a week we clean it out by boiling vinegar with some water and it comes out looking brand new!

I clean it out when I see there is stuff on the bottom but leave my electric hot water pump on all week , 365 days a year till it breaks. My family is big drinkers of hot cocoa and coffee. No time in the morning to wait.

Anyone have a quick calculation of what it costs to keep it on all the time?

I leave mine on. I probably shouldn't, but I do anyway. I've never noticed any problem. To a certain extent, I've always kind of figured that it was staying hot enough to keep things safe.

ETA a quick google search gives 1.5 kW rating for a 10 litre urn and 20.1 cents per kW hr in NY.

0.2 x 1.5 x (24×7) = 50 dollars per week.
That sounds a lot. Have I made a mistake somewhere?

Apparently electricity prices vary a lot by state. (This link is from 2011 and not up to date.)

150 watts to "keep hot". = .150 KiloWatts

0.201 x .150 x 24 x 7 = $5.00 per week.

but does not take into account adding water which triggers the mechanism to heat (which draws more power than to 'keep warm').

How much vinegar or citric acid do you put in? With how much water? After it boils, do you spill it when still hot or wait till it cools off?
