When my son comes home I take out a bin of toys and hang out in the same room as him( cooking or whatever. One day it's duplo, another magna tiles, art stuff... sometimes he "helps me" make supper.

My oldest was just like that I found he was happiest going... so we went to the library twice a week, where they had RIF programs and we got lots of free books. We went grocery shopping. We walked through snow storms. I went to a museum every Sunday. Brooklyn Children Museum used to have free admission if you arrived before 11. We were there.
The years pass, slowly, day by day, now he is a teenager and I send him...on errands and to visit friends and family, and chauffeur younger siblings.

I will bring toys for my 1 1/2 & 3 yr old into the kitchen. Magna tiles, lego. They could play for a fairly nice amount of time if im in the room to admire and talkto them.
My 3 yr old loves stringing cheerios or fruit loops for a special occasion. I like this because I dont have to worry about dropped beads.
Play dough at the kitchen table while imIin the kitchen. 3 yr old can spend hours.
They help me put clothing in the washer, transfer the load etc.
