I'm curious what it comes from. Never had it in my other apartment. It's only in the area that's covered with water.
Is it related to mineral content of water? Hard water? soft water? Old water pipes? Or are these water pipes made of a different material than the ones in my previous apartment?

Sounds like what I have.
There is hard water where I live. In my old apt it was worse.
Here we have a water softener on the main warer line for the house. So that helps.
A filter helps too.
Also, the main floor bathroom doesn't really get to brown, because it's used more. And gets cleaned regularly. The downstairs bathroom can be unused for weeks and so when the water sits it just settles and sticks. So whenever I remember I'll go give it a scrub over with a toilet brush. No biggy.
If it stays really stuck and a brush doesn't help, a cleaning pumice stone works like a charm.

How often do you clean? If you clean more regularly, it should go away.

I have this. its on a part of the toilet that the brush cant reach but still completely grosses me out. No way am I sticking my hand in there wit ha pumice stone. I let a cup of bleach sit there for an hour and then it disappears.
