We are looking to buy a second car. The question is what type. we are not sure if we should spend a little bit extra in order to get a better car which will hopefully last longer or to get a junky car for cheaper because we dont really need a nice car but it wont last as long. We are going to eventually buy a minivan iyh when we need it which we will spend money on so we are not sure if we should spend more money on a second car for now.

If u don't need it in the long run (because your going to buy a minivan eventually) why not get a cheaper car?
It also depends what type of car your first one is.

Is it for local driving or long distance? Do you need a big trunk?

well if we get a nice car we'll use it for long distance but if we get a clunk then we'll rent when we go long distance.

How often do you need the car for long distance trips? Personally, if affordable I would go for a better car. If it's is used often it can really enhance your daily driving.

How soon will you need a minivan? Why not get a medium value minivan that isn't junky and should last a while as your second car? It will be super handy for those long distance drives.

I don't want to get a minivan yet-people are going to think I'm pregnant and anyway we don't need it yet.
