Isn't choosing a thesis supposed to be part of the writing process?
It seems like you should do that yourself. Picking a thesis is not just deciding on a topic; it's also doing some preliminary research into your chosen topic (happiness) and arriving at some cohesive point of view (your thesis statement) which you will now develop and defend in an essay.
Go to the library (or hit the internet) and start reading, and seeing where here is enough "meat" to create a convincing essay.

If love is too broad of a topic, then how about parental love, romantic love, the oh so controversial platonic love.
I think what’s confusing us is the mention of ‘thesis’.
First you pick a topic, then you generate your thesis statement.
I think what your prof was telling you was you’d have difficulty generating a thesis statement from a broad topic.

How about the medical use of laughter as a healing aide? I am sure there is loads of research material on this topic, primary sources from survivors as well as medical clowns.
You can also compare drug-induced euphoria to natural happiness.
