Any live in Portland or know anything about the frum community there? DH and I love the idea of the beauty of the west coast without being in LA. Currently live out of town so there are some aspects we are familiar with. Just looking to find out the size of the community, if it's seeing any growth. How many frum/yeshivish kids are in the day school etc. thanks so much!!

Portland is gorgeous. The cost of living is fairly low, but there are very few jobs there unless you are in a specialist field.

There is an extremely tiny orthodox community, that attends Chabad. The rabbi there is very nice. Portland is 99% reform/secular humanist/super liberal. It's far less observant than Seattle, more like a miniature San Francisco.

You can order kosher food from AffordableKosher, they deliver to Chabad once or twice a month.

The kollel and NCSY there have been doing great work, and the shul is definitely growing. About 5 (?) years ago they broke off from the Chabad day school, which used to be the only option in town, and made their own. They get a lot of their food and other frum resources through Seattle, which is about 2 hours away. It's obviously a relatively small OOT community, but it's warm and growing and welcoming. Definitely contact the kollel and/or shul for more info.

You've got to drive fast without traffic to get there in two hours!
It's a beautiful laid back place.
Outside the frum community it's extremely liberal. Decide if you could stomach that.
You will have to love the outdoors. It's such a beautiful location that you just can't avoid finding beautiful hikes and trails.
Ahh, I miss that area.

$450,000 and up for a single family home. There are rental apartments, I think $1000 and up a month for a 2 bedroom. The main shul is Kesser Israel run by a few frum families.

Do you have middle school girls? When we looked into it, there weren't any frum girls my daughter's age there. But that was 3 yrs ago so check again.

No, I don't think any middle school girls yet. Grades 2&3 are together, 4 &5 together, and 6&7th are together. About 12 children in each class. 6th &7th grade are only boys, I don't think there are any girls that age. There are 3 or 4 girls in 5th that are 11. Then older girls 15/16.

Just saw this now. The community is BH growing with new families moving in each year. Ther school goes up to 8th grade and there are middle school girls. The classes are split from 5th grade. It's a great school with high quality education and they really care about each kid. Houses are about 475-550 in the frum neighborhood, rent is about 2000. It's a very desirable place to live in the country since there is a high quality of life. There's mild weather all year round and the community is open and friendly. Let me know if you want more info.

I don't know about the frum community, but Oregon is beautiful. Lived there before I became frum.
