At what age did you switch from Rectal to oral temputure taking?

When he’s able to hold the thermometer under his tongue with his mouth closed, or when he rebels against the indignity of the rectal method. If the latter happens before the former, you can also try the axillary (armpit) method, but it’s much less reliable and the readings are lower than you’d get with the other two methods. At 5-1/2 your son is old enough to graduate to oral.

nowadays they have other types of thermometers ... shock ... doncha know ... forehead ones and others you put under the arm ... way more practicle and less Puke

I never used rectal. not as a kid in the 70's, and not with my own kids.

Under the arm- make the adjustment because it is not as accurate.Now you can get ear thermometers

5.5? I don't even shower him any more.
And I hope no one uses the same thermometer for both... Smile

I only used rectal for a few months, was too grossed out and now use the armpit with an adjustmant

Actualy when I was a kid in the 70s it was much more prevelent to take rectal temps eveyone did, I think my mother took mine then till I was like 8-9 y.o.

I just got an ear thermometer and LOVE it. The kids ask to have their temp taken!

I just got my son a 'sussy thermometer', cuz till now I used under the arm, but even there he went crazy. He's now 21 months old and I found a 'sussy thermometer', I just hope that it'll work well.
