When I lived in the states, I worked for my mother and my hours were very flexible, so if one of my children were sick, there was no problem staying home or leaving in middle. At one time, I was thinking of getting a job elsewhere, but, among other things, didn't know what to do if one of the kids got sick or things like that. How often would I be able to take off and it would be last minute. It's all nil now because I'm not in that situation anymore, but I was wondering what do working women do when their child is sick? How many days can a person take off already?

BH my kids just get runny noses & coughs, nothing that keeps them off school, but if they can't go to school but don't mind leaving the house, I bring them to work. My job is flexible & there's only a couple of us here. If they are too sick, I stay home, but as I said, that happens maybe 1 day a year.

I get 5 paid days/ yr to use towards anything other than my personal illness. Then,I have 10 days of paid vacation. and 5 days of non-paid vacation.

Yup, kids eat up a lot of it. DH and I share the days.

If I'm "lucky" enough to cv"s be sick, then it comes out of my sick days, and I get 20 days/ yr.

Written with sympathy and understanding: you and all the working mothers send the kids to school with "just" runny noses and coughs (I am being kind here), and then all the other kids and the teachers have to deal with it. And the school nurse has to ask not to send sick kids to school, and can you please pick them up and you get offended. Everyone around those kids gets sick from "just" the runny noses and coughs. I know you are saving your days but please, have the grace not to write about it. It annoys me, the mother at home who keeps sick kids with her. Thank you. We are all paying for your job which I realize is a necessity.

Out of whatever number of sick days I'm allowed a year (no clue how many that is), up to 8 of them can be used for sick children. Beyond that I eat into my vacation time.

I work for a major research/energy/defense contractor for the federal gov't. I'm not a gov't, but I get a lot of perks bc my company is part of a federal contract with two departments.

Oy! You pray a lot and then hope for the best. Mine are only infants so school isn't the issue and we are VERY lucky to have a babysitter who doesn't mind them coming to her sick (she only has her own kids and my two). But even just the dr.'s appointments are enough to drain our days (DD was in PICU for 9 days when she was 8 weeks old so it took MONTHS to complete all her follow-ups with five different specialists). I have 10 vacation, 2 personal (really should be read as 12 vacation as there's no practical difference), and 6 sick days. And yom tovim have to come out out of those days! DH has 10 vacation and 6 sick but can take comp time for yom tov. So he gets the lion's share of dr.'s visits and what not. But it's definitely exhausting - trying to take care of them and really being able to take off no other time whatsoever. Even if we've had a rough night being up all night with one or both and can barely see straight to drive to work....oh well, so sorry. We don't keep our jobs if we're not there (and at least for my job, it's not like I can even take unpaid time off. Once you've used up your time...so sorry...outta luck. Come in or you're out of a job).

Here you need a doctor's note to stay with your kids, unless your boss is reallyyyy nice. With such a note, I don't think anyone can tell you anything or fire you - but it's why they consider it ok to pay women less or not want to hire mothers...
The note can work for the mother or the father, by the way. So many people share the days.

So funny to run across this one today.

I work from home so am in a different position..but my 2 dds are home from daycare today, last week the baby was hime most of the week with bad cough...but its from runny nose which is from allergies...urgh. And the week before that son.

What is so frustrating is that my dh seems to feel that since I work from home it is no big deal. Yeah, I get some work done, but my day is HUGELY interrupted. And if I worked in an office (which I did until we moved here) I would never have been able to take this many days, he would have had to have helped. It truly feels like I've had a kid home at least 1x a week. Yes it is an exageration, but that is how it feels.

Worse, and here is a vent, dh has been going to naitz davening so he can go in earlier and thus leave earlier, but last night we had each kid wake up at a different time. Baby cried at 12:30, need calming and back to sleep...son had nightmare at 1:30, and called out a 2. DD woke up coughing (has bad night cough) and totally sobbing at 2:30. He only got out of bed for the last one and didn't do what I said, which was just to bring her to my bed to stop the sobbing and let me sleep, even though it has beome a horribel habit of hers) so she kept bawling til I had to get her. And he said to me, at one point, well I only have 2 more hours til I have to get up so you have to take care of it.

DON"T GO TO NAITZ-duh! &@Y#U!#@U@Y#T

I'm not as annoyed now, but...
