I think my 9 month old may be bow legged
I was told that it could be linked to a vitamin D deficiency
which they do not get from the breast mild
doctors are also able to feel their stomach right underneith
their breastbone and know if they are vitamin D deficient
does anyone have info about it and what can be done about
bow leggedness

Many babies are bow-legged because of the position they were in while in the womb. The legs usually straighten out by themselves. Definitely mention it to pediatrician. If you're still nervous, see a pediatric orthopedist.

Definitely ask your doc, but most cases straighten out on their own. Lots of docs won't even refer to a specialist before then.

Bow leggedness can also be caused if the baby walks at an early age.

Yesha, that theory is incorrect. See "What to expect the first year". The dr's there say that this is not true, as a baby who walks early is ready physically to walk and will not have any repercussions b/c of it.

Many times, babies look bow legged, but that's usually b/c of the shape and orientation of the gastroc muscles in the legs (the calf muscle). In children the outside part of the gastroc looks larger than the middle side and hence gives off the impression of bow leggedness. Ask your dr or google it.

Well there are 4 women on the various "May 2007" baby lists I belong to who all have 15 month olds who have been walking since they were 7-9 months old and they all have severe bow legs and are in special shoes. And they were diagnosed with x-rays.

The What to Expect series is problematic because it's so popular but gives bad information.

Hmm - well my kids buck that theory. I've had one that could cruise at 6 mos. and several that could walk independently by 9 mos and no problems here. Honestly, there is no medical science behind it and I think it's coincidence backed by bubbemeisa.
