What are the pros and cons of each when moving from a crib?

My kids all moved from the matrices on the ground to a toddler bed. That made them feel comfy because unlike a twin bed it wasn't so big. It also had the railings to keep them on the bed and most toddler beds are closer to the ground than twin beds so children aren't as afraid of falling. The problem is that they grow out of them... but my 4 year old is still using his toddler bed he has about a foot to go before becoming to big and he isn't having issues but we will get him a twin bed soon.

I went straight to a single (twin). We don't have the money or space to spare for something that will be used for only a year or so. And then we'd need another one for DS#2 shortly thereafter, and the rooms just aren't configured for beds that way.

I moved all my kids straight to regular beds. If you are worried get a bed rail.
My 2 year old falls out of bed occasionally, he doesn't even wake up from it...
